Sita Sings the Blues Wins Best in Show!

The ToonSeum recently co-presented cartoonists Nina Paley's Sita Sings the Blues at the Silk Screen Film Festival.

Silk Screen is pleased to announce Sita Sings the Blues as the winner of this year’s RAGS Foundation’s People’s Choice Award.
Sita Sings the Blues is an animated modern-day interpretation of the classic Indian myth, the Ramayana. Creator Nina Paley divides the film into present and past, seeking parallels between her own break up from her husband to Rama and Sita’s. Three witty narrating shadow puppets and Annette Hanshaw’s jazz add to the originality of the film. Sita Sings the Blues has previously won the 2008 Berlin International Film Festival Award and the 2008 Denver International Film Festival Emerging Filmmaker Award.
Silk Screen introduced the People’s Choice Award last year year. It is sponsored by the RAGS Foundation, which is a Pittsburgh non-profit organization started by Sridhar & Gunjan Tayur.
All festival films were eligible for this prize. Over 2,000 festival attendees had the opportunity to rate each film. Moviegoers gave Sita Sings the Blues the highest ratings and selected it as the festival favorite. Nina Paley was in Pittsburgh for the screening and hosted a Q& A at the Harris Theater downtown.
Paley is an avid free-culture enthusiast and has made her film available to the public for download at www.sitasingstheblues.com

Gertie returns to Pittsburgh!
On weds we open an exhibit at the Art Institute of Pittsburgh. It's our first offsite exhibition! Animation B.C. Before Computers. What makes the exhibit so special to me, is that we feature an original production sketch from Gertie the Dinosaur, created in 1914.
Gertie should have a special place in the hearts of Pittsburghers.
In 1907 the first Diplodocus fossil went on display at the Carnegie Museum of Natural History in Pittsburgh, PA. Pittsburgh was and still is the Dinosaur capital of the world! This set off a national fascination with dinosaurs, the next Diplodocus to capture the nations hearts and imaginations would be 7 years later when 10,000 sketches on rice paper came to life in the form of Winsor McCay's Gertie the Dinosaur. Winsor McCay would have toured with Gertie through Pittsburgh, a popular stop on the vaudeville circuit.
And now almost 100 years later Gertie, the first cartoon character is on display in Pittsburgh at the Art Institute of Pittsburgh Gallery for the ToonSeums latest exhibition.

Gertie The Dinosaur

Gertie The Dinosaur is now on display in Pittsburgh in Animation B.C., Whos your favorite fictional dinosaur?
