Fleischer Fest
Tuesday July 20th, 7pm
July marks the 124th birthday of animation pioneer Max Fleischer and the ToonSeum is celebrating with a special screening of Fleischer Studios' groundbreaking work. Along with his brother David, Max innovated the art of animation with technological breakthroughs, stylistic touchstones, and beloved characters.
Fleischer, a model for and rival of Walt Disney, invented the technique of rotoscoping, intermixed animation and live-action film, introduced the “follow the bouncing ball” sing-a-longs, and produced the first synchronized sound cartoons (an achievement often attributed to Disney). But most of all, Fleischer is known to fans of animation for his timeless Betty Boop, Popeye, and Superman shorts. Selections from each of these character catalogs will be screened along with rare Fleischer educational films and a discussion of the Fleischer Studios' legacy.
“Since our opening, we've had more requests for Betty Boop than just about any other character,” said John Mattie, ToonSeum manager. “We're excited to have the opportunity to show these shorts to fans and new audiences alike.”
This screening is recommended for all ages. Admission is $5.

Celebrate the Dog Days of Summer with Cartoon Canines at the ToonSeum!
The Dog Days of Summer officially arrive Saturday, July 24th when the ToonSeum unveils its latest exhibit Cartoon Canines, starring some of man's best cartoon friends.
The Dog Days of Summer: Cartoon Canines features over 50 pieces of original comic strip, animation, and cartoon art of the most famous dogs of all time. Spanning over 100 years of illustrated history, this family-friendly exhibit is surely the largest gathering of these characters in one doghouse.
Cartoon Canines is highlighted by original artwork from the legendary Charles M. Schulz, an early comic strip from Tad Dorgan (circa 1913), turn-of-the-century strips from England and France, Disney production sketches and more. Snoopy, Scooby Doo, Huckleberry Hound, Grimmy, Pluto, Underdog, Ruff, Farley, Goofy, and Auggie Doggie are all off the leash and on our gallery walls, with many more to keep your tail wagging.
The ToonSeum has also scheduled several special events in the comings weeks, including screenings, character meet-and-greets and doggie adoption drives. Cartoon Canines promises a howling good time.
The exhibition runs from July 24th through September 19th.
