The ToonSeum is proud to present the first in a series of screenings and lectures highlighting international cartoonists and animation. While American audiences have become more aware of contributions to the cartoon arts by Japanese and Korean artists, the groundbreaking work of artists in Europe and South America have remained largely unexplored. This series hopes to shed some light on the unique contributions of brilliant artists from around the world who have changed the face of the cartoon arts.
On Thursday, August 11th at 6:45, the ToonSeum will present a lecture from Enrique Salteri, painter, comics artist, and professor of the cartoon arts. Mr. Salteri has published and exhibited his work in the United States, Argentina, and Chile, with several comic strips appearing in the popular Chilean sci-fi magazine Asteroid. He will present a retrospective of the humorous and long-form adventure comics of Chile and Argentina from the 1960s to the 90s, their publishers, and the artists who created them.
Salteri - a professor at the Art Institute of Pittsburgh as well as Duquesne and Edinboro Universities - has frequently delivered lectures and courses on comics in South America and the U.S. and has formed personal relationships with many of the premier South American cartoonists. He is currently working on completing his latest graphic novel for publication.
Upcoming lectures and screenings will explore the stop-motion innovations of Russian animator Ladislaw Starewicz, modern Polish animation, and the effects of German Expressionism in American art and popular culture.
This lecture is free and is open to all ages.
